NYMMO at Moorfest, Sutton Bank

Another enjoyable Sunday afternoon, this weekend NYMMO was at MoorFest held at the Sutton Bank National Park Centre.  Along with the Danby Moor Environmental Stewardship Scheme we were joined by Mark Grimes of Yorkshire Bushcraft an extremely practical man with a really wide range of skills.

Brian Sweeney was again representing the Danby Moor Environmental Stewardship Scheme, which is funded by Natural England and managed by local upland farmers and the Dawnay Estate staff.  The scheme is hoping to improve the quality of the moorland landscape, increase biodiversity, and offset the impacts of climate change.  The project involves the sensitive management of moorland to provide a diverse mosaic of habitats that benefit wildlife, sheep and Red Grouse.

Mark Grimes of Yorkshire Bushcraft (www.yorkshirebushcraft.co.uk) was alongside us this week, he gave among other things, traditional fire lighting demonstrations which the children loved watching and quite a few gave it a go themselves.  Mark also cooked 2 pheasant breasts for lunch, and the smoke created was really drawing people in, a real expert in his field, he offers various bushcraft activities including overnight bushcraft courses for beginners..

There was something for everyone on offer at Moorfest, the Levisham Falconers, the bees, Cleveland search and rescue, the interactive display from the English Companions, felting and various childrens crafts which all went down really well.  In addition to all of the additional activities, there was the new outdoor play area, constructed using natural landscape features, incorporating treehouses, a stone castle, stone roundhouses, a mud kitchen, a large sandpit with a play tree in the centre and there were lots of logs to go climbing on.  A great place to visit at any time of the year, great for walking or cycling.
