BBC Countryfile Live – Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace what a fantastic setting for such a massively well supported event, NYMMO joined the National Gamekeepers Organisation (NGO) on their very busy stand for 3 days of great fun.  Gamekeepers Jimmy Shuttlewood, Matthew Hacketpain and Colin Smith wowed the crowds in their full tweed attire and received many compliments!

The stand was a hive of activity and it was a great pleasure to be working alongside great organisations and individuals including YDMG, Bright Seeds, N.G.O. Educational Trust, GWCT, UKDTR, The Butlers Pantry, Hampshire Game, Tim Maddams, Chris Rogers, Tim Weston and the everpresent Sarah Read.

There was so much to see and do on the stand, the hands on wood pigeon plucking, breasting and eating proved to be a real winner and this was not just with the children!  Over 70 pigeons were plucked and cooked on the Saturday and Sunday and this was a great opportunity for people to see (and taste) what they were eating from the beginning of the process.  We even had one very keen little boy who wanted to have a “Pluck Off” against a gamekeeper.

The MANAGED versus UNMANAGED moorland display was a major focal point of the stand, it created lots of interest and also helped to show and explain why the benefits of managed moorland are so great.  The gamekeepers answered so many questions and spoke about the various birds and animals on show in the display, this was a brilliant way of educating people and all the positive comments received were really pleasing.

The “Splat The Rat” and “Squash The Squirrel” went down a storm with children and adults alike, even Sarah and the gamekeepers kept having a go!

There was also a very well supported raffle taking place for a childs Polaris Quad Bike, with the draw being done live on facebook.

The excellent chefs who worked extremely hard all day each day in providing samples of the most beautiful venison and wild boar steaks, sausages and burgers who fed not only the public but also us deserve a massive thank you, said by many as one of the best stands we’ve been on.  The resounding success of this event was testament to the hardwork put in by everyone involved and the positive feedback, increased publicity and seeing a different variety of people come in to chat with us was greatly received.
